Is our school library going the digital way?

Leroy : May 4, 2013 6:34 pm : Recent

The moment when someone mentions a school library, the image that forms in our head is that of a room filled with huge bookshelves. Now, the situation has totally changed as most of the school libraries have updated themselves with CDs and DVDs by going the digital way. School libraries now also have few computers that can be easily accessed by the students. These computers are connected to the Internet and that gives the students limitless information. The libraries also contain e-books of many popular publications and they are accessible to students during their visit to the library.
Needless to say, this affects the role of the librarian as well. A librarian was someone who existed to select, protect and preserve the hard bound books that came into the library under his control. But the current situation calls for someone who must have a good knowledge of computers and the Internet to handle the various digital resources of the school library.
These digital resources are not just for the older students. There are kids who are as young as third graders who use the school library’s computer to search for information on their science project. Computers in the library have revolutionized the way that kids look for new information. Gone are the days when the kids have to go through volumes of book to find one specific piece of information. Now, all of it is accessible to them at the click of a mouse button.
However, there is still a long way to go before we render the books useless. Experts believe that books will never go out of fashion, especially in libraries because there are people who still prefer it the old fashioned way. While the computers and Internet are just an addition, if not an advancement, in school libraries, they will always be about big bookshelves filled with fat books.
